The Mosaic Dance Company

Artistry

Mosaic Dance Company (MDC), founded by director Myra Krien in 1998, has grown from a local company performing at Cleopatra’s Cafe to a company of national recognition. Renowned for technical and artistic expertise, MDC presents a diverse innovative repertory that honors the traditions of Middle Eastern arts as they relate to American culture and offers a vital contemporary language pushing the limits of the dance form to incorporate an expressive world view.

Community

The Mosaic Dance Company is a non-profit organization under Pomegranate SEEDs® and is dedicated to education. MDC spends a great deal of time working for free in the community with youth. MDC educates about Middle Eastern dance forms, the importance of movement and music, community, conflict resolution, and body image. This is accomplished through regular performances and workshops at schools, retirement homes, non-profit organizations, and local events.

The Mosaic Dance Company is a brilliant example of the ancient art of belly dancing. The performances are of the very highest caliber, with magnificent choreography, costumes, lighting, and of course, the dancing itself. I was so moved by the passion of these young Santa Fe dancers, and by the quality of their art and their commitment to it. They are not only lovely performers, but clearly they are connected with each other in pride and self-esteem and pure joy. It is absolutely thrilling to watch this growth and blossoming and a treat to be present at one of their dazzling performances. It is a privilege to witness the spiritual and artistic power of the Mosaic Dance Company.

Invaders of the Heart

For the past 27 years, Pomegranate Studios and the Mosaic Dance Company have presented an annual theatrical dance production of new work, Invaders of the Heart. These productions have featured national and international guests, as well as multimedia collaborations with visual artists, poets, singers, and musicians.

In 2023, Invaders of the Heart 2023: The Radiant Tarot toured to 6 cities in the U.S. and Mexico. The Radiant Tarot featured the artwork of Alexandra Eldridge and prose of Tony Barnstone, from the tarot deck of the same name. With critical acclaim and several sold-out shows, this production was a huge success. Learn more about The Radiant Tarot here.

For 2024, The Mosaic Dance Company is building Invaders of the Heart 2024: The Return, which will feature the artwork of Michael Bergt and premiere May 24th and 25th at the National Dance Institute in Santa Fe, NM.

The Mosaic Dance Company’s Free Performance Series and annual Invaders of the Heart production is made possible in part by support from New Mexico Arts.
